Rainier is a small town with a population of 1,645 (July 2008). Some of the amenities consist of a small grocery store, post office, gas stations, small restaurants/eateries, veterinary practice, and a real estate office. Rainier does have its own form of Mayor-Council Government, and its own Police Department. The town, also, has the three main schools: elementary, middle, and high school.
Rainier has a small town feel with hobby farms, not far from the main part of town. One of the great things about Rainier is the Chehalis Western trail. You can see many families biking, and walking their dogs, on the rail trail, on sunny afternoons. The Chehalis Western trail occupies an abandoned railroad corridor that was once used by the historic Weyerhaeuser-owned Chehalis Western Railroad. It has been converted to a bicycle, and walking, trail, and intersects with the 14.5 mile Yelm-Tenino Trail. You can even stop, and enjoy, an ice cream, or shake, at the local hamburger joint!
Although Rainier is a smaller town, it sits just 5.58 miles from the town of Yelm, and would take approximately 7 minutes drive time. Yelm includes several major grocery stores (Safeway, and QFC), many fast-food restaurants, such as McDonald's, and Burger King, and has major shopping, such as Wal-Mart.
If you need to get to an even larger town, you could drive North to Olympia, which is approximately 16.88 miles from Rainier, and takes about 32 minutes drive time. The Olympia area has a population of 100,000+ people, and consists of fine dining restaurants, major shopping, and other great amenities.
Rainier is, also, a short distance from Ft. Lewis, just 24.72 miles, with a drive time of approximately 36 minutes. Many military families live in the Rainier/Yelm areas.
